Text Box: DELANEY HEARTBREAK; KNIGHT IN THE PINK AT WRR
                                                 By Bruce Crowley

Winnemucca, NV…Friday night’s stock car action at Winnemucca Regional Raceway’s race card proved to be a mixed surprise bag of racing during Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Night.   For one driver, Winnemucca’s Michael Massing was able to vindicate his opening night last lap smoke parade, as his engine gave up the ghost while going around for an easy heat race, thereby handing rookie Shaylin Sample’s first win in her first race.  Massing put it all together (including the engine) Friday night to sparkle (without the blowing smoke), as he led the entire 20-lap feature Pure Stock to record his first ever main event victory, beating former division champion Walt Frazier.  Frazier did win the heat race, but a costly spin in the feature took him out of the chase for the win. Sample?  While still learning how to handle the car, she guided her cat to a fourth place finish.
Another Winnemucca driver, Jimmy Delaney, had the fastest IMCA Modified car in the field in the 30-lap feature.  After a couple of restarts, Delaney led the first lap over pole sitter 12-time Battle Mountain Raceway champion Ward Amberson from Spring Creek, and Fernley ace Shawn Natenstedt.  It was all Delaney with Amberson and Natenstedt ready to pounce should the leader falter.  Lap after lap Delaney was the master of the universe, at least in Winnemucca. While a lot of position changes were evident further down in the field, those top three did not change.  When he was able to string some green flags in a row, the leader would extend his lead up to five to six lengths over his two closest pursuers.  Between turns three and four, a back marker spun bringing out the dreaded yellow flag.  This was on lap 29, with the leader just yards away from the victory.  Most organized racing associations would throw a yellow/checker at that time, but only the yellow came out, forcing a green/ white/checker to end the race.  That did occur, but, at the green, the cars behind Delaney ran into the back of one another, hitting the Delaney’s car.  Trying to head into the back chute, his car darted to and through the tire wall.  No yellow! Amberson and Natenstedt set sail for the checker, side by side.  Through four they turned into dragsters hurling drown to the checker.  By a mere six inches, it was Amberson over Natenstedt for a thrilling finish.  For Delaney, his race was over in turn two, trying to make some sense out of the whole thing; for the record he was awarded seventh place instead of first, a race that could have been a lot nicer for him.  For Amberson, he said “ if I only lead one lap, I want it to be the last lap.”  He said on that final restart that the cars pushed into each other, and I had nowhere to go except to hit Jimmy.  It was his second career victory here at Winnemucca, and propels him into the point lead over Cory Sample, who finished third. Amberson and Natenstedt won the two heat races.  Somewhere Elvis is singing HEARTBREAK HOTEL.
If you think that was something, you should have seen the feature race for the Mini Mods.  Three-time track champion Ken Knight had his heating problems solved from the opening races two weeks ago, and his son from Fernley was here to race with him.  Ken was on top of the world Friday, beaming from ear to ear; nothing would ruin this night.  Ken won his heat race and another Fernley star Chris Oberman took the honors in the second one over Kevin Knight, Ken’s son.  The Mini Mod feature saw Ken outside first row with Kevin one row back.  Ken’s smile was a little wider by this time; the initial green was out, they were racing.  Ken Knight took the lead immediately over Oberman, but by they completed the first go around, Kevin was right in back of dad.  Ken drove one of his best nights at the track, leading one lap after another; but Kevin was glued to his rear bumper, ready to pass if he could.  Ken was the teacher this night and Kevin was a pupil, one that happened in life many times over the years.  As the laps ran out, the announcers said out loud if Kevin was toying with him.  If he did, we would never know.  With one to go, one could almost see that bigger than life smile on Ken’s smile.  Down the back chute, into three, setting up for four, and then for the charge for the checker, and whoops. Ken bobbled trying to set up for the front chute; guess who was one the inside?  Kevin, that’s who! That bobble was just enough to let son Kevin to win.  Kevin taught dad a lesson: ‘I was paying attention, but you might taught me a little to good about racing. ’  This was Kevin Knight’s first feature win here at Winnemucca, the first time that he beat his dad here.  At Kevin’s home track in Fernley, he would beat the old man all the time.  Too bad the Fernley track has closed, as Ken would have reciprocated there next time. After the race, Ken’s smile was even wider than before, saying, “ Pink finally got me here.  I’m proud, and I hope he continues to race here.  It’s fun!!!”
Shawn LaRoque turned in a masterpiece in the Pro Stock feature, as he led a 25-laps on the one-third clay oval.  No one came close to him, and the win put him into the top of the point standings.  Two weeks ago Shawn won, but it was Natenstedt and LaRoque.  Friday night Natenstedt returned to his Modified car, but should he had brought the Pro Stock, he would have been in the runner up position behind LaRoque.  ‘LeRocket’ also won the heat race and is the new point leader.  Lee Bosch finished second in the feature, but newcomer Dave Clark looked impressive, finishing third.
Next race here will be Friday night May 16.
