NATENSTEDT, SWEET, BOSCH, AYERS & SCHOFIELD SCORE AT WRR
By Bruce Crowley
Winnemucca, NV…Fernley star Shawn Natenstedt showed up Friday night at Winnemucca Regional Raceway after nearly two months of inactivity here on the one-third mile clay oval.  Natenstedt posted a convincing feature race victory in the IMCA Modified division beating out Winnemucca’s Rodney Sweet in the 30-lap event.  Veteran observers of the local racing scene would not have bet on that scenario as two of the best West Coast drivers were also in the field.  One would be Dan Fitzgerald, the Las Vegas schoolteacher who has amassed more than 125 IMCA feature wins for his career, and the other was Dusten Jenks from Chico, Ca the current point leader at Fallon’s Rattlesnake Speedway.  Jenks has won 11 out of the 13 IMCA events run so far this season at Fallon and a great match up was in the offing.  Current point leader Ward Amberson was also there with his 14-time champion credentials;  defending state of Nevada champion Chad Farstveet, of Winnemucca, and defending track champion Cory Sample was also there.  Natenstedt, a two-time Mini Mod champion at Winnemucca was also in the field.  At the initial green flag, Fitzgerald and Jenks were mired toward the back of the pack, ready to move up as quick as they could, as the fans anticipated some open field racing once the two got to the point.  Tim Mazour and Farstveet raced into turn one with Farstveet on top leaving two.  Meanwhile, Fitzgerald and Jenks surveyed the field ahead of them and decided to let some of the 11-catr field sort themselves out before running in earnest.  Local driver Mitch Green bounced into the tire wall leaving turn four and leaving the yellow flag out and Green found himself on the business end of the tow track.
The restart saw cars all over turn two and not all of them were going in the same direction, with both Fitzgerald and Jenks collected in the brouhaha.  Fitzgerald suffered chassis problems and could not continue, somewhat the same thing that did him in last week at Lovelock Speedway.  Jenks had an electrical problem, diagnosed as a broken starter.  So, in just a little more than two laps, the two were out of the race.  Just like that!  Farstveet took control of the race with the next restart as Sweet battled with Sample and Amberson.  Several laps later, Sweet roared into second for a while trying to reel in the low flying Farstveet.  Natenstedt passed Amberson and, a lap later, Sample.  Amberson and Sample are fighting for the coveted track championship and were not taking too much dicing with one another, so Natenstedt did find too much resistance.  Shawn took second from Sweet and was on a mission to take first.  Farstveet did a lazy spin in turn two as Natenstedt went into first place.  Sweet took over the runner-up position over Sample, Mazour and Amberson.   But Farstveet wasn’t finished!  The champ climbed back up into the third spot and was back into the hunt that was until his car stopped on the backstretch.  A bad battery was the culprit, and it removed him from the race.
By this time, it was all Natenstedt taking his first win here this season.  Sweet finished in second in a good performance.  Sample was third with Amberson in fourth.  The point standings became a little muddier as Sample moved to within four points behind Amberson, with only three races remaining.
Sweet had a chance to enter the track’s record book had he won that IMCA Modified feature, although he didn’t know it at the time.  The format of the races showed that the IMCA cars raced third in the five-division card. The Dwarf Cars were listed last and Sweet also runs in that class also.  The eight cars Dwarf Car field could hold a candle to Sweet as the Winnemucca lad toured the 20-lap feature flag to flag, never being headed.  New point leader Chris Forgnone battled Sweet but, in all reality, Mr. Sweet had it his way.  Dave Jenkins was the point leader going into Friday’s contest but had work duty that night and was unable to run.  Winner here two weeks ago Jeremy McKinnon finished a strong third.  Papa Dwarf Ron Jenkins won his first race at the raceway by taking one of the two heat races.  Forgnone won the other heat.  By not competing, Dave Jenkins took the long slide on the banister as he went from first to fifth.  Had Sweet been able to win the earlier IMCA feature, he would have been only the second driver to win two feature races on the same night, as Natenstedt did the trick several years ago winning the Mini Mod and Pro Stock events on the same night.  Sweet has three more chances to do it this year.
Mini Mod feature saw visitor Battle Mountain’s third generation driver Trenton Ayers led all 20-laps to become one of the few drivers ever to win a feature race at Elko’s Summit Raceway, Battle Mountain Raceway and Winnemucca Regional Raceway.  Trenton did the feat the same year, a rare event.  Ayers beat point leader Tim Garner, Ken Knight, Dominick DeGrazia, and Brigham Garrett.  Ayers took first in the heat race over Garrett.  In the race for the Mini Mod title, Garner picked up two markers on DeGrazia and now leads by three.  This race should go right down to the wire.
Winnemucca’s Dale Schofield flew to another feature victory Friday night as only three Pure Stocks were on hand.  Point leader Shaylin Sample finished in second, just ahead of Butch Seals.  Sample led the first lap in the feature for the first time in her rookie year.  Points?  Schofield picked one only one point on Sample and now trails the rookie by 20 markers.  With three to go, Schofield needs a miracle or needs to buy Sample’s car.  Schofield also won the heat race.
In the Pro Stock division, Lee Bosch turned in a good piece of driving after saving his car after nearly dumping it in turn two twice in the feature.  Bosch was the man of the hour in the division as he won the earlier heat race.  Point leader Shawn LaRocque ruined two engines in as many weeks, so to not loose any points in the standings, he borrowed the car of Butch Seals’ car to keep up with the points.  Second in the race was Travis Roysdon and third was Jerry Mock who was in competition for the first time in three years.
August 15 will be the next action for the WSCD drivers here, followed by the 1,000.00 to Win, August 29 event, with the final on September 12.
